North Carolina records $221.7m in gross wagers for first third of FY26

North Carolina’s sports betting market generated $221.7m in gross wagering revenue during the first four months of fiscal year 2026, according to data released by the North Carolina State Lottery Commission.
The state collected an estimated $39.9m in tax proceeds from the 18% tax on gross wagering revenue between July and October. Total wagering revenue, including both paid and promotional wagers, reached $2.35bn during the period.
October recorded the highest monthly performance with $811.4m in total wagering revenue and $78.1m in gross wagering revenue. The month generated $14.1m in estimated tax proceeds for the state. Paid wagering revenue in October totaled $784.3m, while promotional wagering revenue accounted for $27.1m.
The market showed consistent growth throughout the four months. July recorded $370.4m in total wagering revenue, which increased to $478.7m in August and $686.1m in September before reaching its peak in October.
Operators paid out $2.11bn in winnings to players during the period, while cancelled or void wagers totaled $15.5m. Promotional wagering revenue across all four months reached $82.8m, with September recording the highest promotional activity at $32m.
The North Carolina State Lottery Commission noted that the preliminary aggregate amounts are as reported by licensed interactive sports wagering operators. Final revenue amounts that operators report to the North Carolina Department of Revenue could be adjusted.
Gross wagering revenue represents the total amounts received by interactive sports wagering operators from sports wagers, less the amounts paid as winnings before any deductions for expenses, fees or taxes.
September had marked the state’s strongest performance in seven months and came as North Carolina expanded its problem-gaming services and saw new market activity, including the partnership between Catawba Two Kings Casino and the Carolina Panthers.
