Argentina: UTN La Plata to host public forum on online gambling and its social impact

The National Technological University (UTN) La Plata, in Argentina, will host a public discussion on online gambling on Thursday, November 6, at 6 pm in the President Juan Domingo Perón Assembly Hall.
The event, titled “Online Games and Betting: A Problem of Our Time,” is organized by the university’s Academic Secretariat and Health Department and is open to faculty, students and the wider community. The debate seeks to encourage reflection on the expansion of online betting and its effects across different social groups, particularly among young audiences.
The session will feature presentations by psychologist Marcela Soengas and sociologist Lucas Sánchez, both academics from the National University of La Plata (UNLP). Soengas teaches at the Seminar on Drug Addiction and Dependencies at the School of Lacanian Orientation and coordinates pre-professional training in Adult Clinical Studies at UNLP. She also works at the Centre for Assistance and Prevention of Compulsive Gambling.
Sánchez, a doctoral fellow at IdIHCS-UNLP/CONICET, specializes in information technologies, digital inequalities and public policy. His current research analyzes Argentina’s technological development through the satellite industry and ARSAT’s public-sector experience between 2006 and 2024.
According to the organizers, the meeting aims to promote dialogue and generate collective responses to a problem that involves emotional, economic and educational dimensions. They note that digital platforms have intensified exposure to gambling content, creating new challenges for prevention and regulation.
Recent UNICEF data underscores the trend: one in four adolescents in Argentina has placed an online bet, while six in ten know someone who has gambled digitally. Organizers say these figures reflect a broader need for awareness and coordinated action from educational institutions and public authorities.
