Argentine Senator Beatriz Ávila has renewed pressure on Congress to move forward with two pending bills that are aimed at curbing underage gambling and regulating online betting advertising.
The proposals, which have already passed the Chamber of Deputies and are now under review in Senate committees, seek to treat the growing prevalence of gambling among minors as a public health issue.
Ávila said political distractions must not delay progress on this problem that, according to her, “does not distinguish between age or social class.”
Her initiatives would regulate gambling advertisements, restrict exposure to minors, and introduce preventive education programs on gambling addiction in schools.
“We’ve been working on this for a long time and it’s urgent that we act,” Ávila said.
“The testimonies confirm that there is a dramatic reality behind online messages that affect children and teenagers.”
