Buenos Aires authorities hold talks on Necochea Casino jobs after failed tender

Key Points
- IPLyC President Gonzalo Atanasoff and local representatives discussed strategies to protect casino jobs and relaunch the licensing process
- Union delegates warned that prolonged uncertainty could threaten dozens of local jobs and proposed relocation as a possible solution
Gonzalo Atanasoff, President of the Buenos Aires Provincial Institute of Lottery and Casinos (IPLyC), met with local representative Marcelo Rivero to address ongoing concerns over job security at the Necochea Casino, following the failed tender for its operation earlier this year.
The meeting, held in La Plata, also included IPLyC officials Juan Manuel Vernengo, Director of Racetracks and Casinos, and Fernando Mogni, Director of Casino Zone I, alongside union representatives Pablo Iani and Marcelo Fortete.
Rivero said the objective was “to discuss the situation of the casino’s workers and to outline executive and legislative strategies to protect local employment and recover the operation of the gaming hall.”
Union members emphasized the urgency of finding a resolution. A union delegate said, “The workers’ time is not the same as political time. The uncertainty surrounding the casino’s future affects dozens of families in Necochea.”
The meeting followed the collapse of the latest public tender for the casino’s slot machine operations. The IPLyC is expected to reopen the process, as Necochea is considered a key coastal location within the provincial casino network.
Good to Know: The previous tender for Necochea Casino received no bids, leading the province to review the process before launching a new one
One option under analysis is relocating the casino to another city site. Union representatives described it as the last opportunity to preserve employment, although such a move would require new municipal ordinances to authorize construction or operation elsewhere.
Rivero called the meeting “very productive” and highlighted the Institute’s commitment to maintaining dialogue with local authorities and casino employees.
The future of the Necochea casino remains uncertain until a new operator is appointed.
