New Yorkers flock to Connecticut following sports betting launch

Data from GeoComply suggests New Yorkers are eager to travel for safe and regulated betting.

Following the launch of regulated sports betting and iGaming in the state of Connecticut last week, GeoComply has released data suggesting New Yorkers are willing to cross state lines to place bets.

Since the Constitution State launched its regulated iGaming and sports betting markets on October 19, 1.2 million transactions have been recorded. This sees Connecticut overtake Colorado, despite having over 2 million fewer citizens.

“We’ve learned from the New Jersey experience that New Yorkers are clearly motivated to travel locally to bet on sites where proper consumer protections have been put in place that safeguard the integrity of their wager,” commented Chad Kornett, VP Global Government Relations at GeoComply.

So far, betting has been primarily focused on the Stamford and Bridgeport areas along the Long Island Sound. 

“Connecticut looks to be quickly following a similar pattern: Easily accessed from the New York City area, GeoComply’s data shows 38% of Connecticut’s wagering activity has originated from the south western corner of the state along the I-95 corridor,” Kornett added.

As this analysis suggests, New Yorkers are eager for a regulated gaming market of their own, and with the state currently planning to launch its sports betting platform in Q1 of 2022, citizens will not have long to wait.

Sports betting and iGaming have launched throughout Connecticut via two key partnerships. Both the Mohegan Tribe and Mashantucket Pequot Tribe have been granted authorization to operate through agreements with FanDuel and DraftKings respectively.

On the launch, Michelle H. Seagull, the state’s consumer protection commissioner said: “Thank you to everyone who participated in this process to ensure an effective soft launch for online gaming platforms.

“This is an exciting time in our state, and we are proud of the work we have done to ensure a safe and successful gaming landscape in Connecticut. We encourage everyone to enjoy these new forms of entertainment responsibly.”
