Report: Wyoming looking to expand sports betting market

David Carpenter, Wyoming Gaming Commission project manager of sports wagering, expects at least one more operator to be approved next month.
A little more than a month after launching sports betting, Wyoming is looking to expand its market amid lower-than-expected handle.
The state’s Gaming Commission project manager of sports wagering, David Carpenter, told WyoSports that FanDuel and Penn National Gaming’s Barstool Sportsbook are two potential options as additional operators. PointsBet has also been in conversation with the state and could launch in the next six to 12 months.
Wyoming launched sports betting on Sept. 1 with just two operators: DraftKings and BetMGM. In its first full month, Wyoming reported $6m in handle. State regulators had expected annual handle to reach as high as $450m.
“I think we just need to continue to get really strong operators and give everyone an opportunity to find the markets they like. Some people might like an operator’s interface or software a little more than others, so hopefully we have a lot of competition.”
Wyoming passed an online-only sports betting bill in March, and the legislation was signed by Gov. Mark Gordon in April.
With an adult population of roughly 365,000, Wyoming’s market was inevitably going to be one of, if not the smallest in the U.S. BetMGM and DraftKings both reported strong interest in football wagers in football, driven by the state’s lone NCAA Division I program, the University of Wyoming Cowboys.
DraftKings and BetMGM both reported slight deficits in September, a result of heavy promotional play.
