New York casino capacity to expand to 50% on May 15

New York casinos will see capacity increase from 25% to 50% starting May 15 according to new orders from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo made the announcement Monday at the New York State Fairgrounds. “If you tell me what the positivity rate is doing, you tell me what the vaccination rate is doing, then I can tell you what the rate of reopening is,” Cuomo said. “And as our positivity is coming down and our vaccination is going up, you’re going to see more reopening.”
New York reported 4,050 Covid-19 cases on April 25, the state’s fewest since last November.
The doubling of capacity should serve as a major boost for New York’s four commercial casinos, which have seen table games and slots revenue steadily increase this year.
Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady led the state in March gross gaming revenue with $13.9m, up from $10.3m the month prior. Resorts World Catskills was right behind, earning March GGR of $13.8m, also up from $10.3m in February.
del lago Casino & Resort was third with $10.7m of GGR last month, while Tioga Downs Casino took in $7.6m.
Cuomo’s announcement came the same day that neighboring Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey held a press conference on lifting capacity in the Garden State. Murphy’s orders, however, did not touch on the state’s casinos which have been operating at 50% capacity since mid-March.
