Argentina: Senate resumes debate on gambling addiction prevention bill

Key Points
- The proposal already passed the Chamber of Deputies but risks losing status soon
- Senators from multiple parties push to unify 18 separate projects into one initiative
The Argentine Senate is set to resume discussions on a long-delayed bill addressing gambling addiction prevention and regulation of online betting.
A joint session of the Health, General Legislation and Justice and Criminal Affairs committees are set to assemble to consider the proposal, which has already received approval from the Chamber of Deputies.
The debate has so far taken place only within the Health Committee. Senator Lucía Corpacci, main name of the Committee, has called for the project to move forward, warning that the bill could lose parliamentary status by the end of the year if not addressed.
Corpacci stressed that while modifications could be introduced, failing to debate the issue altogether would be unacceptable.
Alongside the bill, lawmakers will also evaluate around 18 other proposals submitted by Senators across party lines.
These projects vary in scope but converge on the need to establish clear frameworks for prevention, regulation and consumer protection in gambling.

This is not the first time Argentina has pursued anti-addiction initiatives. In Rosario, local authorities recently launched a program aimed at prevention and early intervention in gambling disorders, signaling growing concern at multiple levels of government.
The current Senate session seeks to consolidate legislative efforts into a single initiative with the potential to establish nationwide standards for gambling regulation and responsible gaming practices.
