- More than 266,000 winning tickets issued in Virginia during the September 6 drawing
- Lottery proceeds represented around 10% of the state’s K-12 education budget in FY2025
Although no jackpot-winning Powerball tickets were sold in Virginia in the September 6 drawing, the Commonwealth benefited significantly through education funding.
Over the course of the 42 drawings leading up to the $1.787bn prize, Powerball sales in Virginia produced approximately $29.6m in profit. By law, all Virginia Lottery profits are directed to K-12 public education.
The most recent drawing saw more than 266,000 Virginia tickets win prizes. Among them were five tickets worth $100,000 each and four valued at $50,000.
The $100,000 tickets were purchased in Barren Springs, Farmville, Richmond, Stafford, and Winchester, while the $50,000 tickets were sold in Fairfax, Henrico, Manassas, and online via the Virginia Lottery app.
The winning numbers in Saturday’s drawing were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 and Powerball 17. Two tickets, sold in Missouri and Texas, matched all six numbers to split the jackpot. The prize resets at $20m for the next drawing.
Virginia Lottery officials highlighted the wider community impact of ticket sales, regardless of jackpot outcomes.
Good to know: In fiscal year 2025, the Virginia Lottery raised over $901m for K-12 education, accounting for roughly 10% of the state’s total public school budget
Scott Kenyon, Deputy Executive Director of Marketing at the Virginia Lottery, previously noted during the launch of new virtual sports products that “the Lottery’s overall mission [is] raising revenue for K-12 public education in the Commonwealth.”
Earlier this year, the Virginia Lottery became the first in the U.S. to introduce regulated virtual sports draw games, following a collaboration with Aristocrat Interactive, NeoPollard Interactive, and Inspired Entertainment. The move built on its strategy of diversifying offerings to sustain revenue contributions to education.
With Powerball drawings continuing three times per week, the Lottery emphasized that its proceeds remain a vital funding source for schools across Virginia.
