Maryland Lottery releases new responsible gambling video series

Key Points
- Maryland Lottery launches new responsible gambling videos for youth, seniors, military and rural residents
- Videos developed with Maryland State Ad Agency and Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling
- Initiative coincides with Responsible Gaming Education Month in September
Maryland Lottery and Gaming has released a new series of videos promoting responsible gambling awareness, produced in collaboration with the Maryland State Ad Agency and the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling.
The four-part “Mindful Gambling” campaign aims to highlight risks of gambling-related harm and provide guidance on available resources. Messages are tailored to specific groups considered at higher risk, including younger adults, seniors, military personnel and residents in rural areas.
John Martin, Director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming, said: “Emphasizing responsible play will always be an important part of our work. We’re eager to draw attention to the video series in conjunction with Responsible Gaming Education Month. But this is a year-round endeavor for us.”
The videos are available on the Responsible Play section of the Lottery’s website, alongside “Fact or Myth?” features and links to support services. Production was carried out with the help of peer recovery specialists from the Center of Excellence, who appear in the videos and share lived experiences of gambling harm.
Jasmine Countess, the Lottery’s Responsible Gambling Program Director, explained that the videos were created to reflect the experiences of communities most at risk.
Countess said: “We wanted to create messages that raised awareness about some of the groups who are most at risk of gambling-related harm. The Center’s peer counselors are an excellent resource and have a lot of useful knowledge to share.”
Good to know: The Center of Excellence has five peer recovery specialists who also staff the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline, which is available 24/7 and provides free, confidential counseling for Maryland residents
William Hinman, peer support specialist and supervisor at the Center, added: “People who call the helpline may see gambling as a financial solution or an escape from difficulties in their life. We can relate because we’ve been there, so we start by sharing some of our own experiences so they know they aren’t alone or being judged.”
Maryland Lottery and Gaming has advanced through all four levels of certification offered by the World Lottery Association between 2015 and 2022, which sets international standards for responsible gambling.
In April 2025, the Lottery was recognized at the top level of the Responsible Gambling Verification Program, overseen by the National Council on Problem Gambling and the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.
This latest initiative follows other recent developments in Maryland’s gaming sector. Earlier this month, the Lottery and Gaming Control Agency revoked Intralot’s central monitoring contract after a review and named Scientific Games as the leading candidate to assume the deal.
