Chile regulator sets 120-day deadline to prepare casino licensing process

The Superintendence of Casinos has begun preparations to launch a new licensing round following Enjoy’s withdrawal.
Key Points
- SSCJ will take up to 120 business days to publish new licensing terms for casinos in Coquimbo, Viña del Mar and Pucón
- Municipalities will provide input on “special conditions,” including minimum economic bids and local workforce requirements
The Chilean Superintendence of Casinos and Games (SCJ) has confirmed it will use a maximum of 120 business days to prepare and publish the rules for a new public licensing process to operate casinos in Coquimbo, Viña del Mar and Pucón.
The move follows the formal resignation of Enjoy from the three properties earlier this month, which triggered the need to secure new operators within a three-year period.
The regulator explained that within this timeframe it will also define the “special conditions” of the process.
These conditions are expected to include a guaranteed minimum economic offer, investment in new or expanded tourism infrastructure and commitments to retain a proportion of the workforce currently employed at the casinos.
Good to know: Casino workers in Viña del Mar have raised concerns about job security following Enjoy’s exit
Municipalities will play a direct role by submitting their own proposals for these requirements, which will then be reviewed and possibly adjusted by the regulator in technical meetings.
In Pucón, Mayor Sebastián Álvarez said the municipality will work with technical staff, the city council and local business groups, particularly the Tourism Corporation, to ensure the conditions reflect a consensus.
“We want it to be a technical process, a participatory process that represents all of us, not just the view of some over others,” Álvarez stated.
