NCPG files for arbitration in problem gambling hotline dispute with CCGNJ

The hotline will continue to run until August 26.
Key Points
- A New Jersey court has granted the NCPG a temporary restraining order to keep the hotline from being shut down
- This will allow the hotline to be available through August 26
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has recently called for arbitration regarding a dispute with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ).
The disagreement involves the national 1-800-GAMBLER problem gambling hotline, and which entity has jurisdiction.
The CCGNJ grants licensing rights for the NCPG to use the hotline number nationally for an annual $150,000 fee. However, the NCPG operates and maintains the hotline.
The duo’s collaboration with the hotline currently has a three-year life cycle, but the contract expired in May.
The NCPG, however, has pursued extensions to the recently expired contract.
NCPG Board President Derek Longmeier said in a statement, “Over the past three years, the National Problem Gambling Helpline, anchored by 1-800-GAMBLER, has made tremendous strides in expanding access, providing more effective assistance, and reaching more diverse communities.
“As we continue this critical work, NCPG remains dedicated to protecting the integrity of the helpline and upholding a national network that is consistent, reliable, and responsive to those in need of problem gambling support.”
A New Jersey court has granted the NCPG a temporary restraining order against the CCGNJ, which allows the group to continue running the hotline until August 26. Without this action, the hotline could have been shut down.
