Argentina: Malargüe to block online gambling sites on public Wi-Fi networks

Key Points
- The ordinance mandates blocking online gambling sites on public Wi-Fi networks and establishes a municipal program to prevent gambling addiction
- In addition, public policies will be implemented, focused on digital education and financial literacy
- The measure addresses the rise of online gambling via mobile devices
Malargüe, in Mendoza, Argentina, has approved a municipal ordinance to block online gambling sites on public Wi-Fi networks.
This bill, approved by the City Council and signed by council members Magalí Acosta, Emilce Mansilla and Rodrigo Hidalgo, also establishes the creation of a municipal program to prevent online gambling.
It calls for ongoing awareness campaigns targeting minors in schools, as well as the implementation of guidance and treatment programs for individuals suffering from gambling addiction.
The proposed legislation acknowledges that “gambling, as a cultural activity, has historically been present in society, originally associated with festive and ritual practices.”
However, it also calls for government intervention, stating that “the State has the duty to intervene preventively, ensuring the development of public policies aimed at digital education, financial literacy, and the responsible use of technology.”
The regulation includes provisions to restrict access, through public WiFi networks, to websites featuring explicit sexual content or material associated with child exploitation.
Good to know: A similar measure was implemented in May by the city of Mar del Plata, where a bill to block gambling sites on public Wi-Fi networks was unanimously approved
In addition, according to councilors, evidence and statistical data indicate a significant increase in online gambling via mobile devices, particularly smartphones.
This rise poses a considerable risk, especially for children and adolescents who can quickly access these sites or apps without adequate supervision.
For this reason, the regulation aims to protect vulnerable groups by implementing preventive measures that limit exposure to harmful content and activities, reinforcing the State’s commitment to digital education and safety.

Odds tell a story long before the result does. When bettors learn to read that story properly, betting becomes a matter of discipline and value rather than emotion or guesswork.
