The Government of Mendoza, Argentina, held a meeting to dialogue about the use of technology and online gaming among minors.
The Minister of Education, Culture, Childhood and the General Directorate of Schools (DGE), Tadeo García Zalazar, led the session alongside UNICEF professionals.
The encounter, titled “Use of Technology and Online Gambling in Adolescence,” aimed to raise awareness and present statistics addressing one of the challenges faced by adolescents.
The event brought together participants from various sectors, including technical teams from the General Directorate of Schools, healthcare professionals, public officials, educators, families, adolescents, among others.
The purpose was to facilitate discussion and information sharing among professionals and institutions linked to education and health, along with other relevant actors, to examine the effects of technology use and online gambling among adolescents and to establish common guidelines for prevention within the educational system.
Activities focused on research presentations, discussion panels and a final plenary session with all participants, where various actions to address the issue were proposed.
García Zalazar explained: “The problem of excessive screen use is a challenge of our time. We must address it in different ways to support families. We reviewed studies presented by UNICEF as well as provincial research from Mendoza to suggest strategies that schools can implement to support parents and adolescents.
“There are encouraging findings, as joint intervention by families, the education system, and the media can lead to positive outcomes that reduce excessive screen use.”
García Zalazar also noted that schools can provide tools and suggestions, but families must take concrete action.

Carina Gannan, Director of School Support at the DGE, presented the findings of a census carried out among students throughout Mendoza: “This issue requires a comprehensive approach involving all areas of government and coordinated efforts.
“Prevention must be a priority. It is particularly concerning that 8 out of 10 students, for example, are familiar with online gambling platforms, this is a clear warning sign.”
Rafael Ramírez, UNICEF’s representative in Argentina, stated: “This is a rapidly emerging world. We need to support children and adolescents, as things are becoming more sophisticated and can affect mental health. We need to deepen our understanding of the situation.”
