Brazil may allocate 0.1% of betting revenue to deaf sports federation

Key Points
- Proposal would allocate 0.1% of online betting revenue to CBDS
- If approved, Ministry of Sport’s share would be reduced from 22.2% to 22.1%
- Bill still requires approval by three additional Chamber commissions
A bill already approved by the Chamber of Deputies’ Commission for the Rights of People with Disabilities seeks to allocate 0.1% of Brazil’s online fixed-odds betting revenue to the Brazilian Confederation of Sports for the Deaf (CBDS).
The CBDS is the official organization responsible for promoting and organizing sports for deaf athletes in Brazil.
The measure reduces the Ministry of Sport’s current share of 22.2% to 22.1%, with the redirected funds intended to support deaf athletes and related development programmes.
The amendment was introduced by Deputy Flávia Morais, who presented a substitute text to the original bill authored by Deputy Julio Cesar Ribeiro.
Morais strongly argued the funding would significantly strengthen CBDS initiatives, by saying that the CBDS “plays a vital role in promoting sports among the deaf community.”
She pointed to its work in organizing training, competitions and support structures for athletes with hearing disabilities.
Good to know: Brazil has recently installed a joint committee to assess the proposed betting tax bill
The bill still requires approval by three different committees in the Chamber: Sports, Finance and Taxation, and Constitution and Justice. If passed, it will then proceed to the Federal Senate.
This comes amid the Finance Minister’s calls for a higher taxation on betting companies, a matter that is now being considered by the Brazilian Senate.
