NYC: City Council halts Bally’s Bronx casino proposal

The governing body denied zoning changes needed to advance the project.
Key Points
- The proposal included a 500,000-square-foot casino, 2,000-seat event center, a 500-room hotel with a spa and meeting space
- Councilwoman Kristy Marmorato said she is pleased with the vote
The New York City Council has voted against zoning changes necessary for Bally’s to move forward with its Bronx casino project, according to an MSN report.
The vote follows a recent approval that would have given Bally’s the greenlight to use space at the former Bronx golf course for its casino project.
Bally’s has not released a statement regarding this vote. However, City Councilwoman Kristy Marmorato approved of the decision and said the proposed project “did not meet the standards her community deserves,” the MSN report said.
Bally’s construction plans for the Bronx site included a 500,000-square-foot casino, 2,000-seat event center, a 500-room hotel with a spa and meeting space and retail shops, as well as two parking garages with up to a 4,660-vehicle capacity.
To rallly support, Bally’s recently offered residents in The Bronx a piece of the investment action through an effort to secure a bid for a casino license to open a facility in the neighborhood.
The offer allowed residents to purchase shares in the casino entertainment destination, which would be located close to the Ferry Point golf course.
Bronx residents could also invest in the casino, with the likelihood of owing up to 10% of the facility.
In addition to the share buying offer, Bally’s said it “is pledging that at least 1% of its gross revenues from the casino will go to community benefits programs in The Bronx” if it is awarded the license.
This could generate $10m per year or $100m during the next decade, according to local reports.
Bally’s said it planned to use these funds for NYCHA and community housing, schools and PTAs, mental health and substance abuse programs, and to help support the local cable TV outlet, BronxNet.
