Maine Governor delays signing online gaming expansion bill into law

This is one of nearly 60 bills waiting to be signed.
Key Points
- Gov. Mills could not veto bills sent to her desk because the legislative session was adjourned for now
- The new online gaming expansion bill would give the Wabanaki Nations an opportunity to provide online gaming
Maine Gov. Janet Mills is holding off on signing a gambling bill into law, according to a local report from Maine Public Radio.
The legislation in question includes an online gambling expansion bill, which would allow the Wabanaki Nations to offer online gaming around the state.
Currently, the Passamaquoddy Tribe, the Penobscot Nation, Mi’kmaq Nation and Houlton Band of Maliseet are permitted to provide online gambling to state players and have exclusive access to these markets.
Under LD 1164, Tribes would be allowed to establish contracts with vendors and offer players access to casino-style games like blackjack and poker through websites and mobile apps.
According to the local report, the Governor has decided to hold this and other bills “until lawmakers return potentially next year.”
In a report the Governor’s office recently released to local media, nearly 60 bills have passed the state’s most recent legislative session but won’t be signed right now by Mills. Because legislators adjourned this year’s session, Mills was not allowed to veto any bills passed.
Gov. Mills’ office recently released a statement to local media on the recent decision, saying, “The Legislature passed a significant number of bills at the end of session, and the Governor takes seriously her constitutional obligation to thoroughly review all of them and to evaluate their implications on Maine people, Maine businesses and the Maine economy.
“In order to meet that responsibility, she will continue to review these bills and gather more information, and she looks forward to acting on them at the beginning of the next legislative session.”
