Brazil: Senator defends tougher oversight following CPI report rejection

Key Points
- Senator Izalci Lucas condemned the rejection of the CPI das Bets final report
- Lucas claimed the CPI process lacked fairness, citing procedural inconsistencies
- He also criticised other senators for voting without participating in the hearings
In a Senate speech, Senator Izalci Lucas took aim at the rejection of the CPI das Bets final report.
Lucas said that, despite having submitted a 3,000 page supplementary report and attending every session, he was not allowed to vote due to his role as a substitute member of the inquiry.
“I didn’t miss a single meeting. And yet, my vote didn’t count. Meanwhile, a senator who never attended any hearings showed up just to vote against the text,” he said.
The Senator has openly criticised the rejection of the final report from the CPI das Bets, calling the decision “disappointing” and “procedurally flawed.”
The report, presented by Senator Soraya Thronicke, included recommendations for the indictment of 16 individuals and a series of legislative proposals to tighten betting regulation.
Good to know: The CPI President, Senator Hiran, responded to accusations of sabotage in the report’s rejection
Izalci called the rejection a wasted opportunity to bring greater transparency to the online betting industry, which has been under increased scrutiny in Brazil.
The senator defended the efforts of the CPI to investigate promotional tactics, platform operation, and influencer involvement in gambling-related campaigns.
Although the final report was rejected, the proposed bills to tighten betting regulations have still been forwarded to the Senate for further analysis.
