SPGA responds to Connecticut Governor prohibiting sweepstakes

Key Points
- The SPGA stated SB 1235 “fails to distinguish between lawful promotional sweepstakes and unregulated gambling”
- New York is also considering anti-sweepstakes legislation, as the state’s Senate committee recently pushed SB 5935 to the Assembly
The Social and Promotional Games Association (SPGA) released a statement in response to Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont choosing to sign Senate Bill 1235 into law on June 11, becoming the second state to officially prohibit the use of online sweepstakes casinos.
The Association stated it is “frustrated” by Governor Lamont’s decision, believing such gaming types “have long operated under well-established legal frameworks and provide safe, free-to-play entertainment for millions of American adults.”
New York is also considering anti-sweepstakes legislation at the time of writing, as the state’s Senate committee recently pushed SB 5935 to the Assembly.
“Unfortunately, Connecticut’s sweeping legislation fails to distinguish between lawful promotional sweepstakes and unregulated gambling, despite the absence of any meaningful evidence of consumer harm,” the SPGA continued.
Good to know: AGS Interactive expanded its operations to the state of Connecticut on June 4, representing the supplier’s sixth regulated US market entry with titles such as Capital Gains, Blazing Luck and Dragon Fa
“Instead of engaging with operators who prioritize consumer protections, compliance and responsible standards, lawmakers have chosen a path that will harm innovation, limit consumer choice and push compliant businesses out of the state.”
Connecticut’s anti-sweepstakes legislation will officially go into effect on October 1, also set to allow betting on boxing and mixed martial arts.
