Casino operator in Argentina changes management following year of conflict

The new administration of Newtronic will be in charge of the Casino of Gualeguaychú.

Newtronic, Entre Ríos, Argentina’s main betting and slot machine company, and opeator of the Casino of Gualeguaychú, has changed ownership. 

The previous owners were brothers Carlos and Alfredo Ferrari. The new management, which is currently underway but has already been approved by the Institute for Financial Assistance to Social Action (IAFAS), is headed by the Banfi brothers of the Teleinfo group. They currently operate the Concepción de Uruguay and Diamante theaters.

The last year has been critical for the Casino of Gualeguaychú; due to the lack of or partial payment for almost 80 workers, which led to a clash between them and the authoritiesm, and a strike last month. 

Besides, the casino has closed its doors due to a lack of power. According to local media, there are overdue payments on the electric cooperative’s bills, which led the power company to cut off the supply.

In conversation with El Argentino, a local newspaper, Ricardo Colombo, representative of the Argentine Union of Gaming Workers (Aleara), informed that wages have not been adjusted in the last two years.

Good to know: Casino cleaners currently earn ARS $600,000 per month (approximately $520), while technicians make ARS $850,000 per month (around $740)

He added: “We are willing to listen and support them during this time. We are ready to cooperate in everything related to the staff, who need to be motivated again, because people are very affected by the lack of communication with the previous administration.” 

The new ownership has not yet been formally confirmed, leaving workers still awaiting clarity on their situation.

Colombo concluded: “It would be good for them to introduce themselves, explain what their work policy will be, the investments they plan to make, and then we will move forward with wage negotiations.”
