Resorts World Las Vegas must pay a $10.5m fine, according to a local report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The company received the penalty from the Nevada Gaming Commission, following a complaint filed last summer by the Nevada Gaming Control Board against Resorts World Las Vegas and its parent company, Genting Berhad.
According to the complaint, Resorts World Las Vegas failed to comply with anti-money laundering regulations and allowed play from gamblers “with ties to illegal bookmaking and histories of federal felony convictions.”
Furthermore, the regulatory body claimed the casino resort “operated with a culture that suggested persons with ties to illegal bookmaking were welcomed at the property.”
The amended complaint mentioned the names of two illegal bookmakers, Mathew Bowyer and Damien Leforbes, the local report said.
In the settlement, both Resorts World and Genting did not confirm or deny any allegations, the Review-Journal reported. Resorts World has agreed to impliment tighter restrictions, however.
Prior to its meeting with the Gaming Commission, Resorts World Las Vegas announced it was laying off several full-time employees.
The casino hotel issued a recent statement regarding the layoff and said it had “made the difficult decision to restructure a portion of our operations by less than 50 full-time team members.”
Resorts World added this decision was to “best position the company.”
The company told local news, “We appreciate the contributions all affected team members have made.
“This decision is part of our ongoing efforts to optimize efficiency and maximize the exceptional experience we seek to deliver to our guests.”
