Bally’s sued over claims that white men cannot invest in Chicago project

Key Points
- The suit claims Bally’s is not allowing white men to invest in its Chicago casino project
- The casino development is due to wrap up next year
The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) is suing Bally’s Casino and members of the Illinois Gaming Commission on grounds of “racial discrimination,” according to a recent Fox News report.
The institute claims that Bally’s has violated the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and alleges that the company “is preventing white men from buying stock.”
WILL further claims that Bally’s is “preventing shareholders from transferring shares to people who do not meet Class A criteria.”
Wisconsin Institute of Law and Liberty’s Dan Lennington told Fox News Digital, “Making a contract is essential to the rights of citizenship. What Bally’s is doing here is absolutely illegal and has been for decades and decades.”
A Chicago attorney, Patrick Callahan, alleged that he was not allowed to invest in the Bally’s Chicago project because he is a white male.
However, Callahan is not a party to the litigation, according to Fox News.
“It’s so blatantly discriminatory,” Callahan said. “I can’t imagine how that could possibly be permissible.”
Bally’s Chicago is currently operating as a temporary casino until the company completes its permanent location.
Good to know: Its temporary casino at Medinah Temple welcomed its first guests to the property last fall.
Bally’s is currently developing its permanent Chicago casino location. The company said it anticipates opening the destination by 2026.
Once completed, the venue will be home to 4,000 gaming positions, as well as to an exhibition hall, 500-room hotel, a 3,000-seat theater and 10 restaurants.
