Former regulator proposes uniform betting age of 21 for adult gamblers

This would apply to all forms of gambling.
Former gambling regulator David Rebuck has proposed that all forms of gambling adopt a uniform age of 21 to participate, according to an Associated Press report.
Rebuck submitted the recommendations through a recent essay.
The uniform age limit would apply to all forms of gambling, including playing fantasy sports and buying lottery tickets.
Rebuck also said he wants to see a restriction on arcade games that “closely resemble casino games or slot machines, and more closely oversee daily fantasy sports games and regulate them as a form of gambling.”
He told the Associated Press that his recommendations for a 21-year-old age requirement “are designed to address what we all know will happen to some people who gamble.”
He went on to comment, “People are going to slip into addiction. We all know that.”
Rebuck recently retired from his position as the Director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. He served with the regulator for 13 years.
The state of New Jersey currently allows those who are 18 and older to purchase lottery tickets. Select states also allow 18-year-old patrons to gamble in casinos.
Since the US Supreme Court overturned a national ban on sports betting in May 2018, 38 states and the District of Columbia have opened legal and regulated sports wagering markets.
The states of Delaware, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington State and Wisconsin currently allow sports betting only at retail and Tribal brick-and-mortar locations.
Along with Washington DC, 27 states currently offer both online and retail sports wagering options.
