Mirage to temporarily close Monday through Wednesday
MGM Resorts casino The Mirage will temporarily close all operations Monday through Wednesday beginning 4 January.
“With weekday business levels remaining low due to COVID-19 and the restrictions on group gatherings, we have made the decision to temporarily close The Mirage Monday – Wednesday, effective January 4, 2021,” the company said in a statement. “This closure will include the casino, hotel and restaurants, in addition to all other amenities. While we do not currently expect the mid-week closure to remain in effect past February, we will continue evaluating how long The Mirage’s mid-week hotel closure will remain in effect.”
The Mirage, considered the Strip’s first modern megaresort, reopened in late August following a shutdown of more than five months.
Last month MGM announced it was closing the casino’s hotel tower midweek and that it did not expect those closures to last past December. Since that announcement, the US has seen Covid-19 cases hit record numbers around the country, reducing travel.
Midweek occupancy was already low before the recent spike in cases. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported October midweek occupancy of 39%, down 49% year-on-year.
The Mirage’s Monday through Wednesday closure could lead to more furloughs and layoffs from MGM.
MGM announced 18,000 layoffs on 28 August, which was the day after The Mirage reopened.
