Strat Hotel will let one person be a human ball drop on NYE

In lieu of fireworks, casinos on The Strip look for innovative ways to attract business.

The Strat Hotel and Casino is holding a sweepstakes to find someone to serve as a human ball drop on New Year’s Eve to mimic celebrations in New York City.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has added the traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks show on The Strip to the long list of events that have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving casinos to get creative to drum up alternatives.

One of those is The Strat’s “Midnight Mirror Ball” contest. The casino will select one winner to leap from its SkyJump attraction at the stroke of midnight on 31 December.

SkyJump Powered by MTN DEW is described as an open-air, controlled descent from 855 feet above the Las Vegas Strip. The attraction holds a Guinness World Record as the highest commercial decelerator descent facility.

SkyJump usually is closed on New Year’s Eve as fireworks are shot off the top of the Strat’s tower, but it will be open and operating this year, along with the other thrill rides.

The winner and three guests will receive several prizes, including unlimited thrill rides wristbands, an invitation for four to a private party in the SkyPod tower that will include complimentary cocktails, a selection of hors d’oeuvres, hats and noisemakers. Also included are two complimentary rooms for a one-night stay on 31 December at The Strat Hotel, one bottle of Dom Perignon to toast the New Year after leaping from the tower, and one digital video of the SkyJump experience.

Would-be participants may enter to win on The Strat’s Instagram page. One winner will be announced on 23 December.
