MGM Springfield suffers worst month ever in tough November for Massachusetts casinos
Massachusetts’ three commercial casinos earned $45.4m in gross gaming revenue for November, down 42% year-on-year and a decline of 35% from the prior month.
MGM Springfield took in $10.5m, its worst full month since opening in September 2018. Revenue dropped 47% y-o-y and fell 40%, or $7m, from October.
Wynn’s Encore led the state with win of $27.3m, down from $41.1m in October and a y-o-y decline of 42%.
Plainridge Park Casino, which offers slots but not table games, earned $7.6m, down 31% y-o-y. Plainridge saw the smallest month-on-month drop of the three casinos, a decline of 25% from October’s $10.5m win
Massachusetts commercial casinos are operating under reduced hours of 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Casino floors are limited to 25% capacity and only about a third of table games and slots are open.
The November figures reflect a rise of Covid-19 cases in Massachusetts and across the greater northeast region. Cases in the Bay State peaked in early December, but Massachusetts residents remain under tight stay-at-home orders.
To add to troubles, a significant winter storm is expected bring between 8-14 inches of snow to the state this week, which could further hamper casino traffic.
