Former Toronto Raptor Jontay Porter set to be charged in sports betting case

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn filed a “criminal information sheet” on July 2 against former NBA player Jontay Porter, who was suspended for life after participating in a betting scandal. Porter is now set to be charged with a federal felony for the part he played in the scandal, though the document doesn’t specify a court date or the charge(s) he is facing.
An NBA investigation found in April that Porter tipped off bettors about possible injuries he may have been suffering from and followed that by claiming illness to exit at least one game. This led to creating wins for anyone who’d bet on him to underperform expectations.
He also gambled on NBA games in which he didn’t play, once even betting against his own team according to the league.
Porter’s lawyer, Jeff Jensen, was sent voice and email messages on July 3 which went without a reply. Jensen was quoted in June having said Porter was “in over his head due to a gambling addiction” but getting treatment and cooperating with law enforcement at the time.
The former Toronto Raptor was allegedly encouraged by co-conspirators to exit certain NBA games early in order to pay off debt he had accumulated over time. The people named as co-conspirators were Long Phi Pham, Timothy McCormack, Mahmud Mollah and Ammar Awawdeh. The four are currently facing charges related to defrauding a sports betting company for alleged involvement in the scheme.
Porter is expected to plead guilty to the federal charges placed against him due to the charges being delivered through an information document as opposed to an indictment.
