Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont advises patience regarding Texas gambling
The family has worked to bring gaming to the Lone Star State.
Patrick Dumont recently offered his thoughts regarding possible legalized gambling in Texas, according to an Associated Press news report. The new Dallas Mavericks governor stated that “the timing is uncertain” as to when Lone Star State residents can expect to see a regulated gaming market.
Dumont bought the club last year and is the son-in-law of Miriam Adelson. She remains a majority shareholder in Las Vegas Sands following a $2bn sale in stock to take majority ownership of the Mavericks from previous owner, Mark Cuban.
The family purchased the club for $3.5bn.
In recent years, both the Adelson and Dumont families have worked to bring casino gambling to the Lone Star State. Both families have spent millions of dollars to expand Texas gambling.
As part of the initiative, the Adelson and Dumont families have joined Cuban efforts to introduce resort-style casino gambling to Texas players.
Although Dumont remarked that timing for a legalized market is uncertain, he told Associated Press that the family is willing to go the distance in the waiting process.
He commented, “We’re patient. We think long term. We’re not people who think in the short term.”
To move forward with building a Dallas casino, the city would need to approve permits, along with road closures, construction and several procedures to build a large enough structure to house a casino.
Because Texas lawmakers have not moved to expand gambling around the state at this time, the mayor said he “remains skeptical if it will even get that far along.”
To date, more than 35 states have embraced regulated sports betting since the US Supreme overturned the federal ban in May 2018.
