Investigators from the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division were alerted by an online gambling company in July 2023 about sports wagers made by a prohibited individual.
The subject in question was recently identified as 21-year-old Kayshon Boutte, a former Louisiana State University (LSU) football player from Baton Rouge.
The investigation revealed that Boutte engaged in sports gambling from April 6 2022 to May 7 2023. During this period, he was still just 20 years old.
To circumvent the legal age requirement for sports wagering in Louisiana, Boutte employed an alias during this period. The alias account associated with Boutte reportedly placed over 8900 wagers, with at least 17 focusing on National Collegiate Athletic Association football games, including six on LSU football.
On January 18 2024, an arrest warrant was issued through the 19th Judicial District Court, charging Boutte with Computer Fraud (Felony – One Count) and Gaming Prohibited for Persons Under 21 (Misdemeanor – One Count), as per Louisiana Revised Statutes.
Subsequently, on January 25 2024, Boutte was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish jail on these charges. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be brought forth.
As this case unfolds, it sheds light on the challenges posed by underage online sports gambling and the efforts of law enforcement to address such violations in the gaming industry.
