The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has published its casino and sports betting revenue report for the month of March. The state's three casinos, Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor posted a combined total of close to $105m in gross gaming revenue (GGR).
MGM Springfield brought in $24m in slot and table game revenue during March, the second-highest total in the destination’s history.
However, MGM Springfield’s on-site sportsbook March handle fell short of its February total by nearly $100,000. The location posted a total March handle of $1.6m.
Encore Boston Harbor posted an on-site sports betting handle of $13.4m for March, which dropped by close to $3m when compared to numbers from February. Plainridge Park’s March total reflected similar downward trends.
The casino posted an on-site sports betting handle of $4.8m for the month, down nearly $1m from February’s amount.
Currently, the state is home to six mobile sports betting operators. Massachusetts players yielded $548m in wagers during March.
According to the report, BetMGM contributed close to $45m to the total March handle.
Responsible gaming has remained a company focus throughout the year. BetMGM, along with its parent company MGM Resorts, has recently joined the American Gaming Association and became an official partner of its “Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly” campaign.
Massachusetts is one of the latest states to open a regulated sports betting market for its residents. State Governor Charlie Baker signed a bill to legalize online sports betting last summer.
The commercial retail market officially opened January 31, ahead of the upcoming Super Bowl LVII. Online sports betting went live statewide last month.
Since the Supreme Court overturned PASPA in 2018, online gambling is currently available in more than 35 states, with 18 of those allowing for legal online sports wagering.
