Sports betting and iGaming operator BetMGM has released a statement to its customers, warning them of a security breach regarding personal information.
The brand stated that the issue affected a segment of patrons’ personal data, including names, dates of birth, personal contact information and hashed social security numbers.
BetMGM noted that the information had been “obtained in an unauthorized manner.” The operator said it began an investigation after discovering the breach and is working with security experts as well as law enforcement.
BetMGM became aware of the unauthorized access on November 28 and said it believes the security issues happened in May.
As of now, the company does not have any evidence that passwords and account funds have been accessed.
Company CEO Adam Greenblatt commented: "We are taking this matter very seriously and are working quickly to investigate it.
“The security of our platform and our patrons' data is a top priority for BetMGM. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.”
BetMGM recently gave the International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) a $180,000 grant to support the organization’s responsible gambling education efforts. The grant will also aid the ICRG in its ongoing research regarding the potential link between advertising and problem gambling.
BetMGM, along with its parent company MGM Resorts, also recently joined the American Gaming Association and became official partners of its “Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly” campaign.
Throughout its social media platforms, the company offered players tips and educational resources regarding responsible gambling during September’s Responsible Gaming Education Month.
