Any sports bettor will tell you it is difficult to hit a parlay, which is why social media was blowing up Monday as word spread of one of the most remarkable two-leg parlays ever.
According to FanDuel’s Twitter account, one of its customers combined two long-odds bets into one outcome, and managed to turn $20 into $579,020!
The bettor wagered on the exact score of both NFL Conference Championship Games on Sunday: Cincinnati-Kansas City on the AFC side, Los Angeles vs San Francisco in the NFC. In the former, the final score of Bengals 27, Chiefs 24 had listed odds of +22000 (meaning a $100 bet would win $22,000), while Rams 20-49ers 17 went off at +13000.
When combined as a two-leg parlay, the two exact score wagers had odds of +2895000.
As if the bettor needed any more drama, both games featured double-digit comebacks. Kansas City led Cincinnati 21-3 with five minutes left in the first half before the Bengals scored 21 straight to take a 24-21 lead late in the game. The Chiefs tied it with a field goal as regulation time expired before the Bengals won with a field goal in overtime.
Similarly, San Francisco scored a touchdown to take a 17-7 lead with less than two minutes to play in the third quarter, only to see the Rams score 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
Super Bowl countdown underway
Now, all eyes in the sports betting world turn to Super Bowl LVI, which will be played two Sundays from now, on February 13.
After 54 years of no team playing the Super Bowl in its home stadium, this year will see the second straight such occurrence. Tampa Bay hosted Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium, while SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, home of both the Rams and Chargers, is the site for this year’s game.
The Rams have been installed as the favorite, according to analysis released Monday by TheLines, which tracks odds in the US regulated sports betting market.
The Rams are favored by 4 points over the Bengals, with the over/under total set at 49.5 points, according to a consensus of the nation’s largest legal online sportsbooks – including DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars and PointsBet.
The Rams opened the season at +1500 to win the Super Bowl, but only two teams – the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions – had longer preseason odds to win the Super Bowl than the Bengals, who were listed at +15000.
Cincinnati is 0-2 all-time in Super Bowls, with both losses coming to the San Francisco 49ers. The Bengals are one of 12 NFL franchises to have never won the championship game.
The Rams are 1-4 in their history in the Super Bowl, with the lone win coming in the 1999 season against Tennessee.
“These playoff games have been as thrilling as any in NFL history and the stage is set for a similar Super Bowl, despite a matchup that not many expected,” Brett Collson, lead analyst for TheLines.com, said in a statement. “From Tampa Bay to Green Bay to Kansas City, the favorites dropped. This matchup is compelling from many viewpoints, including the quarterback battle between Joe Burrow and Matthew Stafford, which will draw a lot of attention.”
