New York continues to stake an outsized place for itself in the sports betting landscape. For the second consecutive week, the Empire State has shown magnificent progress, according to GeoComply, the geolocation-driven data analysis company.
Last weekend’s numbers show that New York’s superb debut is yet to slow down. Since legalization, 1.2 million accounts have been created on one of the five sportsbooks that currently have licenses to operate. Additionally, in the last weekend alone, GeoComply was able to detect 17.9 million transactions.
From this, there are indications of 878,000 unique users. Of this inordinately high number, no fewer than 87.8% are newcomers to the world of regulated sports betting.
This last figure is significant, for it shows that the legalization of mobile betting in New York has not affected New Jersey too adversely. Many analysts feared that a proportion of New Jersey bettors were in fact New Yorkers who had crossed the river to make a legal bet. That fear has not been borne out.
Only 9.3% of New York bettors had previously placed a bet in New Jersey. Furthermore, the Garden State’s numbers have remained high: in the two weekends prior to New York’s legalization, there was an average of 12.6 million geolocation transactions, while in the two weeks since the launch, there has been an average of 13.1 million.
According to Lindsay Slader, GeoComply’s Managing Director of Gaming: “The momentum of New York’s sports betting launch has continued, and it is mostly home-grown. The vast majority of users are brand new to regulated sports betting in the US. The data tell us that New Yorkers are dumping illegal sportsbooks for the new legal options and operators are also excelling at attracting first-time bettors.”
Despite the fact that the data company can pick up on numbers of transactions and bettors, there is still no indication of what the handle has been during the opening few weeks. That news is still several weeks off.
