The NFL and Kansas City Chiefs dominated as the Empire State’s sports betting market got off to an impressive start.

Following the launch of four online sports betting platforms in New York on January 8, DraftKings, one of the four operators, has provided a number of insights into the state’s first weekend of sports wagering.

On DraftKings’ platform, approximately 46% of all handle came from the National Football League, with a further 24% coming from the National Basketball Association. College basketball and college football followed, taking up approximately 6% and 5% of handle respectively.

Moreover, over 60% of bets placed in New York were on the NFL, the NBA followed with 24%. Once again, college basketball and college football followed in this department, making up 6% and 5% of total bets.

Some of the operator’s largest payouts this weekend include an $18,000 bet on the KC Chiefs that won $21,000 and a $10,900 bet on under 167.5 total points in New Orleans at Northwestern State that paid $18,700.

The KC Chiefs were the most bet team in New York’s first weekend of sports wagering, followed by the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. Others in the top ten include the Buffalo Bills, Indiana Colts and Green Bay Packers, as well as the two New York-based teams the Jets and the Knicks.

The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes came in as the most bet player over the weekend, matching his team's place as the most bet franchise. Drew Lock came in second, followed by Travis Kelce and Javonte Williams.

Finally, it was the KC Chiefs’ game at the Denver Broncos that attracted the most bets as the NFL edges closer to the Super Bowl

These statistics reveal that the first weekend of sports wagering in the Empire State was undoubtedly a successful one. Gaming America will continue to report updates on this exciting moment in US sports betting.
