BetArizona, a resource for sports betting statistics, has today released the details of a survey of Arizona citizens ahead of the launch of statewide mobile sports betting. The study examined current sports betting habits as well as their plans for post-legalization.
With mobile sports betting expected to launch on September 9, nearly 1 in 5, or 17%, said they currently bet on sports through offshore websites or in other regulated states. Of these people, 84% said they would bet in the state once it launches.
Meanwhile, 22% suggested they will place bets within the state once it becomes a legal activity.
Fifteen percent of sports fans said they’re very likely to bet on sports once it is legalized. Of those who said they would place a bet come September 9, 54% of them plan to bet at least once a week.
The study also found that 26% of Arizona adults have travelled across state lines at least once to Colorado or Nevada to place legal bets. BetArizona’s data further suggests that there is a market for legalized betting on college sports, with 19% of the state’s adults suggesting they would wager on college events.
Outside of traditional sports betting, nearly half of those who plan to wager on sports would also place bets on US elections if it were legal. Similarly, 38% and 44% of sports bettors would wager on the Grammys or reality TV, respectively.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed sports betting into law in April 2021 and the following months saw the state government finalize the regulations surrounding the activity. Arizona will allow 20 online sportsbooks, which will be split between the state’s professional sports teams and its federally recognized tribes.
