FanDuel, DraftKings, pour millions into Florida sports betting expansion efforts
FanDuel and DraftKings have each spent $10m to fund a political action committee seeking to legalize sports betting in Florida.
FanDuel and DraftKings contributed to Florida Education Champions, which is behind a ballot initiative to legalize sports betting. Voters would be allowed to vote on the initiative in November 2022.
The measure would authorize sports betting at professional sprots venues and parimutuel facilities and would give operators the ability to offer mobile sports wagering.
The initiative runs counter to a $2.5bn agreement signed this spring by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
DraftKings and FanDuel both made public comments on the initiative through a statement released by Florida Educational Champions.
“… DraftKings provided Florida Education Champions with critical funding to ensure that Floridians have the opportunity to vote on a sports betting framework that would provide access to the best sports betting experience while increasing funding for Florida’s public education system,” said Griffin Finan, VP for government affairs at DraftKings.
Added FanDuel VP for government affairs Corey Fox, “It is our shared goal to have a safe, legal and regulated market for offering online sports betting in the Sunshine State. Once passed by Florida voters in November 2022, this initiative will ensure that the State of Florida shares in the sports wagering revenue that is currently going entirely to the offshore, illegal market.”
A campaign finance report released by the Florida Division of Elections shows DraftKings and FanDuel made donations days before a new law went into effect July 1 that limits PAC contributions at $3,000 per individual per campaign.
