Move by Alberta premier Jason Kenney and minister of health Tyler Shandro hopes to encourage more Albertans to get their second vaccine.

New rewards have been added to Alberta's vaccine lottery including vacation packages and travel prizes.

The province has introduced 40 new prizes to their Open for Summer lottery, which gives those who get their Covid19 vaccine the chance to win rewards.

These new travel prizes will be provided by WestJet and Air Canada, and will be available to any Albertans who get the full two doses of their Covid19 vaccine.

Prizes include weeklong vacations in luxury resorts in Canada and abroad. This adds to the three $1m cash rewards available to anyone who gets their name added to the lottery through providing proof of their double vaccination.

Approximately 69% of Alberta citizens have had at least the first dose of the vaccine. The province will lift all but a few of its restrictions to protect its residents from Covid19 once the vaccination rate reaches 70%.

Premier Jason Kenney (pictured) said: “Alberta’s government is doing everything it can to encourage Albertans to get vaccinated so we can put this pandemic behind us. We want Albertans to get their vaccines as soon as possible so we can fully open for summer and open for good.”

Alberta has also announced the opening of a pop up vaccination clinic in a southwest Edmonton mosque in a push to expand the vaccine rollout. The clinic will run Friday through Sunday and allow up to 1,200 Albertans to receive their shots.

As of June 16, Canada has vaccinated 65.4% of its population with the first dose of the vaccine, second only to Kuwait. However, only 13.9% of the nation's population have received their second dose.
