Buenos Aires: Kicillof highlights restoration of La Plata Racetrack

Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof attended the Gran Premio Internacional Dardo Rocha at the La Plata Racetrack, underscoring the provincial government’s ongoing investment in restoring the venue and positioning it as a tourism and community site.
Kicillof was joined by Minister of Government Carlos Bianco, La Plata Mayor Julio Alak, Instituto de Lotería y Casinos President Gonzalo Atanasof and racetrack administrator Mariano Cowen during the event, which formed part of the city’s anniversary celebrations.
Kicillof said: “For us, it is a point of pride to see the La Plata Racetrack regain its full splendor after so many years of neglect. As an iconic and foundational landmark of the provincial capital, we invested alongside the municipality to incorporate the technology and resources needed to support the many families whose livelihoods depend on horse racing, cultural events and tourism.”
Julio Alak said: “The racetrack is a historic space and a tourist attraction for our city, and today we can see it shining like never before. This is the result of the commitment, the work and the major investment carried out by the provincial government.”
Gonzalo Atanasof stated that the racetrack has strengthened its role not only as a provincial turf venue but also as a cultural meeting point for the community.
Mariano Cowen, Administrator of the Hipódromo de La Plata, said that the restoration process reflects “a collective construction” supported by workers, families, investors in the horse-racing sector and the provincial government.
The provincial administration emphasized that the improvements form part of a wider initiative to modernize the venue and support tourism activity linked to equestrian events, entertainment and cultural programming. While financial details were not disclosed, officials highlighted technology upgrades, infrastructure restoration and operational improvements aimed at consolidating the racetrack’s role within the city.
The Gran Premio Internacional Dardo Rocha remains the racetrack’s main annual event and one of the most prominent dates in the national turf calendar. The anniversary celebrations continued with cultural programming in central La Plata, reinforcing the province’s strategy to connect heritage, entertainment and tourism development.
