Brazilian employee admits embezzling R$280,000 for online gambling

A former employee in Palmas, Brazil, has confessed to embezzling nearly R$280,000 ($53,000) from her employer to fund online gambling activities, according to the Civil Police.
The suspect, who held a position of trust with access to company finances, has been indicted for aggravated theft.
According to Detective Túlio Mota, the woman exploited her privileged access to company accounts to systematically transfer funds to her personal bank accounts using Pix and TED, Brazil’s electronic transfer systems.
During her police statement, she admitted to losing all the embezzled money through online gambling.
The investigation revealed that the embezzlement occurred on an ongoing basis over an extended period. Authorities also discovered that approximately R$20,000 of the stolen funds had been transferred to a third party who was unaware of the money’s illicit origin.
The suspect’s identity has not been released by authorities.
The woman was charged with aggravated theft due to abuse of trust, a more serious offence reflecting her position within the company and the breach of confidence involved.
The investigation has been completed and submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for further legal proceedings.
The case emerges amid intense political debate over the sector’s regulation and taxation. Former House Speaker Arthur Lira recently argued that authorities should prioritise cracking down on illegal operators before increasing taxes on licensed companies, noting that approximately half of Brazil’s betting market operates outside legal channels.
Meanwhile, newly appointed Minister Guilherme Boulos has called for increased taxation on betting operators as part of broader revenue reforms.
