Missouri casinos report $177.5m in August revenue, up 9% year-over-year

According to data released by the Missouri Gaming Commission, Missouri’s licensed riverboat casinos generated $177.5m in revenue in August. The figure reflects a 9% increase compared to $163.3m in the same month last year.
Of the 13 casinos operating in the state, nine recorded year-on-year increases, two remained flat and two reported declines. Slot machines accounted for the largest share, producing $151.8m, up from $139.3m in August 2023. Table game revenue rose 21.5% to $25.7m, while hybrid table games contributed an additional $30,683.
Among individual properties, Ameristar Casino in St. Charles led the market with $27.3m in revenue, up from $25.5m last year. River City Casino and Hollywood Casino exceeded $20m in August, posting gains of 11% and 3%, respectively. St. Jo Frontier Casino was the only operator to register a decline, down 2% to $4.2m.
Alongside the revenue report, attention is turning to Missouri’s upcoming sports betting market. Penn Sports Interactive, operator of the ESPN Bet brand, submitted an online sportsbook license application with the Missouri Gaming Commission.
The filing comes ahead of the September 12 deadline for companies seeking to launch on the state’s first day of legal wagering.
To date, five operators have applied for online licenses. DraftKings and Circa Sports have already been awarded two of Missouri’s limited untethered permits. Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel, Fanatics Sportsbook and Underdog have each pursued market entry through casino or professional sports team partnerships.

Penn Entertainment plans to connect its ESPN Bet platform with its Hollywood Casino and River City Casino properties in the state. Caesars has applied for both online and retail licenses through Harrah’s Kansas City and Horseshoe St. Louis. FanDuel has partnered with MLS club St. Louis City, while Fanatics is aligned with Boyd Gaming’s Ameristar Casino locations.
The Missouri Gaming Commission may issue up to 19 retail sportsbook licenses and 14 online sportsbook licenses. The launch of legal sports betting is scheduled for December 1.
