New York Lottery schools and retailers gain $154m from Powerball rollup

Public schools received $64.3m as retailers earned $11m in commissions during the jackpot run.
Key Points
- Powerball sales in New York during the $1.787bn jackpot cycle generated $64.3m for education
- Retailers across the state collected $11m in commissions from ticket sales
- More than 100 New Yorkers won prizes of $50,000 or more during the rollup
Even though the $1.787bn Powerball jackpot on September 6 was claimed in Missouri and Texas, New York saw significant local benefits.
From the start of the jackpot run on June 2 through the winning draw, Powerball ticket sales in the state generated a combined $154bm, with $64.3m directed to public schools and $11m going to lottery retailers.
The New York State Gaming Commission confirmed that the remainder came from overall prize payouts to state residents, with more than 100 players winning amounts of $50,000 or more during the three-month cycle.
These included seven second-prize winners of $1m each, alongside Power Play prizes ranging from $100,000 to $200,000.
Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer said: “Massive jackpots generate additional excitement, which in turn delivers increased sales that directly benefit New York’s public schools and small businesses. Plus, more than 100 lucky New Yorkers won life-changing prizes during the three-month run.”
Good to know: In fiscal year 2024, the New York Lottery contributed $3.8bn to public schools, funding over 700 districts across the state
Since 1967, the Lottery has generated more than $86bn for education, a message reinforced through its “A Chance to Dream” advertising campaign launched last year.
While no jackpot winners emerged in New York this time, the rollup reinforced the role of the Lottery as a revenue driver for both schools and independent retailers.
Many of the state’s 110 winning tickets worth at least $50,000 were sold in local convenience stores, gas stations, and supermarkets, underlining the continued importance of smaller businesses in the Lottery’s distribution network.
The Powerball jackpot has now reset to $20m for the next drawing, but officials stressed that each cycle – whether or not the top prize is won in New York – delivers tangible benefits to education and small businesses across the state.
