Brazil: Piauí assembly committee approves gambling awareness program

The Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of Piauí’s Legislative Assembly has approved a bill to establish the educational program Fim de Jogo (Game Over).

The project is designed to raise awareness among children and adolescents about the dangers of gambling and betting addiction in public schools in the state.

The bill, introduced by state deputy Dr. Hélio Oliveira, authorizes the state’s Education Secretary to implement the program, which will now move to the Assembly’s Health, Education and Culture Committee for further review.

Deputy Gracinha Mão Santa, a main figure of the measure, stressed the need for preventive action. 

“The easy access to the internet and the proliferation of digital platforms have increased the presence of gambling and betting in the daily lives of children and adolescents,” she said. “This phenomenon carries significant risks for the emotional, social and financial development of young people.”

The proposal outlines the creation of educational materials on the harms of gambling, annual campaigns, lectures and workshops.

It also promotes the use of technology in healthy ways, encouraging alternatives to children, such as sports, reading and in-person social interaction.

Authorities across the country, including federal lawmakers and regulators, have recently voiced concerns over rising gambling addiction, particularly among young audiences.
