Lottery, casino and sports betting contribute $1.59bn to Maryland FY2025 tax revenue

The Maryland Lottery, along with the state’s casinos, sportsbooks and daily fantasy sports operators, contributed a combined $1.59bn to state programs and services for the Fiscal Year 2025.

According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, casino gaming generated $831.3m in contributions, lottery reached $667.2m, while sports wagering and daily fantasy sports added $89.9m. Of the total, $696.2m was directed to education programs. Combined, these sectors delivered an average of $4.35m per day to the state.

Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin said: “These are fun and games, but our role in responsibly generating revenue is serious. We hope we also generate some good times along the way, but supporting vital state programs is never far from our minds.”

The Lottery posted its fourth-best performance in 52 years, with $2.63bn in total sales. Scratch-off tickets led the way with $1.06bn, surpassing the $1bn mark for the fourth consecutive year.

Players claimed $1.67bn in prizes, averaging nearly $4.6m per day. In addition, 1,638 prizes exceeded $10,000, including 490 worth $50,000 or more and 33 of at least $1m. Retailers earned $195.7m in commissions, averaging over $45,000 each. 

Maryland’s six casinos generated $1.96bn in revenue from slot machines and table games, their third-best year on record. They contributed $831.3m to the state, including $606.2m to the Education Trust Fund (ETF), which supports early childhood education, public schools and capital improvement projects.

Since 2010, over $6.4bn in casino revenue has been directed to the ETF.

Casinos also contributed $105.1m to local community programs, $95.2m to the horseracing sector, $20.4m to Maryland’s Small, Minority and Women-Owned Business Fund, and $4.4m to responsible gaming initiatives.

Sports wagering contributed $88.9m in FY2025, up from $60.3m the year prior. Mobile operators now contribute 20% of taxable proceeds to education, while retail operators contribute 15%.

Daily fantasy sports added over $1m to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. In total, $5.7m was allocated to problem gambling prevention efforts.
