New Jersey legislation to ban collegiate prop bets passes through state committee

Key Points
- Under S-3080, a proposition bet is defined as a “side wager on a part of a sport or athletic event that does not concern the outcome”
- College prop betting is currently prohibited in numerous states including Ohio, Maryland and Louisiana which represent the latest to implement such legislation
New Jersey Senator Kristin Corrado’s legislation which looks to prohibit proposition betting on collegiate sports and protect student-athletes across the state has now passed through the State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee.
“Proposition bets have led to a rise in the harassment of student-athletes and have threatened the integrity of college sports,” Corrado said.
“I have heard about many individuals who have been the victim of online harassment because they didn’t perform to the expectation of a bettor who made a side wager. This legislation will ban player-specific prop betting in New Jersey, which will help curb that appalling behavior, and make college athletic events safer for all participants.”
Senator Corrado’s bill, S-3080, would prohibit sports wagering licensees in New Jersey from offering or accepting wagers on player-specific proposition bets for collegiate sports.
Under S-3080, a proposition bet is defined as a “side wager on a part of a sport or athletic event that does not concern the outcome.”
