Brazil: Senator is concerned short timeline may weaken betting inquiry

Key Points
- Senator urges an extension of the inquiry, mentioning time pressure and lack of quoru
- Most confidential information requests remain pending, with over 80% of hearings yet to happen
- Commission may face legal and procedural barriers without a formal extension
With a few weeks left before its scheduled end, Brazil’s Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on betting faces tight deadlines, limited progress and concern from its members, according to Senator Soraya Thronicke.
Indeed, Thronicke warned that, without an official extension, the CPI will fall short of its investigative goals.
In a Senate plenary session, Thronicke said a request signed by 29 senators, more than one third of the chamber, had already been filed to support a 130-day extension.
However, the extension has not yet been formalised, as it requires formal reading by the Senate President.“I will deliver my work, but not the way I imagined, only the way that’s possible,” Thronicke stated, adding that while she could appeal to the Supreme Court, she prefers to resolve the issue through dialogue.
Installed in November 2024, the CPI was extended once in April for 45 days and is now set to conclude by 14 June. Thronicke criticised the previous extension for being insufficient.
Good to know: Recently, the Brazilian Senate approved restrictions on sports betting advertising, prohibiting influencers, active athletes and authorities to be part of promotional content
Of the 19 people heard across 22 meetings in the CPI, this represents only a small fraction of the approved hearings.
Several witnesses, including influencer Jon Vlogs, owner of platform JonBet, failed to appear.

Odds tell a story long before the result does. When bettors learn to read that story properly, betting becomes a matter of discipline and value rather than emotion or guesswork.
