Michigan regulator issues four cease-and-desist letters

These operators were found to be in violation of state law.
Key Points
- An investigation found that more than one operator was offering gaming in Michigan without holding a license from the state
- Some of these operators are offshore
The Michigan Gaming Control Board recently sent cease-and-desist orders to four operators. These included You Wager, Bet Pop Casino, Wager 7 and Discount Wager.
The control board recently launched investigations into these platforms for illegal activity and discovered they were in violation of Michigan gaming laws.
The regulator shared the results of its inquiry by saying, “Investigations by the MGCB revealed that these offshore gambling sites were accepting wagers on various gambling activities, including sports and casino-style games, without the necessary state licensing.
“These operations violate Michigan’s Lawful Internet Gaming Act, the Gaming Control and Revenue Act, and the Michigan Penal Code. Additionally, they pose risks to consumers, including the lack of player protections, responsible gaming safeguards and legal recourse in the event of disputes.”
Operating an unlicensed gambling business in Michigan is a felony per state law.
According to the state penal code, “Gambling, which involves payment based on the outcome of an uncertain event, is prohibited under state law.”
It is illegal to accept money “with the understanding it will be paid based on a game of chance.”
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said, “Illegal gambling operations prey on vulnerable consumers and undermine the integrity of the regulated gaming industry.
“Michigan residents deserve the protections that come with licensed, legal gaming. We will continue to take strong action against those who skirt the law.”
