Brazilian Senate debates banning betting advertisements across media platforms

Brazilian Senate’s Sports Committee, the Comissão de Esporte do Senado, is debating banning all forms of advertising by betting companies across the country. The session included discussion among senators, representatives from broadcasting companies and legal experts.

The bill, authored by Senator Eduardo Girão, would prohibit betting ads on television, radio, streaming platforms, websites, stadium signage and public transportation.

As reported by CartaCapital, a Brazilian weekly news magazine focused on politics, society and public policy, it also includes limits on the tone of advertising, such as banning messaging that links gambling to personal success or happiness.

Girão defended the proposal by stating that Brazil is facing a surge in sports betting without adequate regulation. He argued that the bill is necessary to encourage public debate on the topic.

Good to know: Advertising restrictions are already in place for other regulated sectors in Brazil, including tobacco and alcohol. Lawmakers may weigh up whether betting should receive similar treatment

Representatives from Grupo Globo, SBT and Record, important Brazilian news sources, were invited to present perspectives on how the ban would impact broadcasting operations.

Members of the commission agreed on the need for continued discussion and postponed the vote on the proposal to allow more time for stakeholder input.

The bill remains under review and another hearing will happen next Wednesday.
