Brazil: Ministry of Sports looks into gambling promotion irregularities on YouTube

53 accounts and 25 channels through the investigation.
Key Points
- Broadcasts promoting gambling received more than 100,000 views
- Players were promised easy profit, but were not given any of the promised prizes
An investigation has been carried out by the National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports (SNAEDE), which has found irregularities on YouTube related to the promotion of gambling.
A letter was sent by the Ministry of Sports through SNAEDE to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security going through the irregularities that had been identified and denouncing them.
In total, the investigation found that 53 accounts and 25 channels on YouTube had been encouraging gambling, speaking about how players could get easy profit, which saw more than 100,000 viewers per broadcast.
The investigation found that there was a possibility of websites promoted by influencers receiving money from bettors, but then not paying any of the promised prizes, before the website is then deactivated.
The Ministry of Sports has requested support from the Ministry of Justice to proceed with investigations, with the possibility that the Federal Police may be called upon to help deal with those involved with this fraud.
Good to know: Brazil’s regulated online betting market is set to launch on January 1
Sports Minister André Fufuca said, “We are talking about thousands of Brazilians who, deceived by promises of easy money, end up being victims of fraud.
“Sports betting must be regulated to guarantee transparency and security for the population. Our priority is to protect Brazilians and ensure the integrity of sports.”
Secretary of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports Giovanni Rocco added, “These sites hide behind social media platforms to carry out scams. They deceive people through influencers, promising quick gains and money to pay bills, go to the grocery store, supplement their income. But this is not gambling; it is a crime against the popular economy.”
In other news from the region, the Instituto Brasileiro de Jogo Responsável (IBJR) earlier this month released a manifesto that outlines guidelines for play and processes to encourage “transparency, security and integrity.”
