Virginia Tech dismisses Hysier Miller following NCAA gambling investigation

Virginia Tech point guard Hysier Miller was recently dismissed from the Hokies’ men’s basketball team, according to a news report from Bleacher Report.
The school issued a statement, explaining that Miller was dismissed due to “circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech.”
Temple, Miller’s former school, has been under scrutiny because of an NCAA investigation into “unusual betting patterns” during the previous season.
Gambling activity flagged by gaming watchdog company US Integrity prompted the NCAA investigation, according to the local report.
Miller recently transferred to Virginia Tech from Temple during the offseason.
While playing for the Owls, Miller averaged 15.9 points per game, as well as four assists and 3.6 rebounds.
Pat Forde of SI.com told local news that “it’s unclear what vetting Virginia Tech did of Miller’s time at Temple, but sources say new information came to light earlier this month regarding the probe at Temple.”
Miller is not the first athlete to be investigated due to gambling activity. Prior to his dismissal from the NBA, Jontay Porter played center for the Raptors. The NBA began looking into prop bet abnormalities surrounding the player last spring.
Examples of proposition bets include placing wagers on how many rebounds or points a basketball player could have or the number of touchdowns or yards that football players might have.
With prop bets, players bet on these game aspects “instead of or in conjunction with a game’s outcome or spread.”
Along with the NBA, several states have addressed the issue of prop betting and have put restrictions in place.
