Latest Wynn Resorts tower project at risk of cancellation

The county building staff suggested denying an extension for plans to build a tower on the Strip.

The Clark County Building Department staff has recommended that an extension request from Wynn Resorts to build a 1,110-room hotel tower should be denied, according to a local report in the Bellingham Herald.

The company asked for a five-year extension on the 3.4 million square-foot project that would put a tower on 38 acres of vacant land across from its Wynn and Encore hotel casinos.

Wynn Resorts attributed its need for an extension of the project to delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Plans for construction were previously approved by the county. The county approved development plans in 2015 for a parcel of land that Wynn later purchased two years later for $336m.

However, the county never laid out a specific timeline for development when issuing the approval.

According to the local report, the Clark County Zoning Commission is expected to consider the matter during an upcoming April meeting.

Wynn Resorts said gaining an extension for the project will give the company enough time to consider the best development plan for the land.

Concerns because of the age of the original approval have led to county building department staff recommending the extension’s denial, the local report said. There have not been any project studies or building permits submitted for review.

Wynn Resorts owns and operates four locations, including Wynn Las Vegas, Encore Boston Harbor, Wynn Palace and Wynn Macau. The group is part of the S&P 500 Index, as well as on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and is traded under the WYNN ticker symbol.
